Title: AI and Linux programmer Post by: meanerelk on June 25, 2008, 11:57:06 AM I am an student AI researcher, so I would love the opportunity to work on AI scripting for single-player missions and any non-player units in multiplayer, like turrets and such. Also, I am a huge fan of Linux, so I would really like to see a game client for Linux users like me. I would be willing to make that happen, as long as enough of the game source is available to make a Linux port feasible.
Developing a linux client, if possible, would do more than just expand your user base. Some of the best programmers are Linux hackers, so there is a lot of talent potentially available in the open-source community. Moreover, there are few high-quality games like this available for Linux, so I am sure there would be many people willing to contribute. Name: meanerelk Age: 22 Position: Programmer Experience: I am proficient in C, C++, Java, Python. I also have some experience with Lisp, Ruby, and Perl. I am very familiar with Linux as a user and sysadmin. I have used visual studio and a couple other IDE's before, so I can compile with those no problem. Past Projects: Unfortunately, I have never gotten the opportunity to work on any games before. However, you have to start somewhere! Ties to Mechwarrior: I've spent a huge chunk of my life piloting mechs in Mechwarriors 2, 3 and 4. I beat the single player missions in all of those games, and played some multiplayer and NetBattleTech as well. These are definitely my favorite games of all time, so I am incredibly excited to see fans coming together like this to make a new game. MW:LL has the potential to be even better than MW2. It is designed by fans, with the Crysis engine? Amazing! Other commitments: I am a student and researcher, so I cannot commit to this project full time. However, I will contribute as much as I can, at least a couple of hours a week. SAMPLES: Like I said, I have no experience with this kind of thing, so I have no samples to send. Could you gauge my ability with a project to work on for you? Title: Re: AI and Linux programmer Post by: ToeBall on June 25, 2008, 12:08:20 PM Task sent.
Title: Re: AI and Linux programmer Post by: KorJax on June 25, 2008, 01:15:05 PM I'm not sure the Linux thing will work out, simply because MWLL is a mod for Crysis, and will require the game Crysis to run (which is a windows thing).
Title: Re: AI and Linux programmer Post by: Seraph on June 25, 2008, 01:34:13 PM I doubt we will see anything like that. The Crytek team failed on the Linux Dedicated Server and I am sure there is no development going on for Linux on this game as a client. It just depends too heavily on DX9/10 - and Linux just can't offer that exact same thing.
Not to mention you would probably need the full license for the engine .. and unless someone comes up with 500k$ that's not gonna happen either. Too bad :( Would love to see that game for Linux. Title: Re: AI and Linux programmer Post by: meanerelk on June 25, 2008, 05:49:29 PM ToeBall, got it. Thanks for the opportunity to contribute!
Yeah I figured a Linux client would be far-fetched. It's a shame, really. Title: Re: AI and Linux programmer Post by: Landros Radick on June 25, 2008, 07:30:45 PM That's not to say there won't be something in the future, so there still might be contributions for Linux to be made!
Title: Re: AI and Linux programmer Post by: ToeBall on June 28, 2008, 03:18:35 PM Unlikely that there will be anything linux related that the community could contribute to since CryEngine 2 is not open source. It is, in fact, a closed source commercial product who's source is quite expensive.
