Hey All! To kick off the month of November, Mechwarrior Living Legends team is holding a Betty contest!

Betty, as most of you know, is the sexy and sometimes sultry sounding voice of the Battlemech computers in the Mechwarrior series. What we'd like to do is have a little contest to see if anyones wives, girlfriends, daughters, friends can produce a Betty voice!

The winner(s) will be showcased in the November Newsletter for MW:LL and possibly included into the first release of the mod! not guaranteed

What you need to do:
(1) Obtain Girlfriend/Wife/Daughter/Female Friend (or if you are one, skip this step)
(2) Record a line from Mechwarrior Betty's (Bottom of this post are some example lines)
(3) Host the file somewhere
(4) Post link here!

Recording Format: 44khz, 16bit, Mono
File formats we will accept:
.ogg, .wav, .mp3

Here's an example file my girlfriend did:
http://landrosradick.shackspace.com/Mech/AP-AYT.wav

We'll be providing the "effect" of sounding like Betty, so there's no need to edit the file itself! Just send us the voice sample and we'll modify it and post it back here! Again, PLEASE do not add your own effects to the audio file!

Some tips for recording:
Have a noise canceling microphone (most microphones, including desktop ones provide this these days)
Hold the microphone about 4-6 inches AWAY from the mouth and nostril area, preferably to the side as to not pick up any breathing.
Give it multiple takes (and it's ok to host the file with multiple takes on it) until you or her feel comfortable with the recording.

Example Text:
"Ammunition Level Critical"
"Shutting down"
"Light Amplification Engaged"
"Autopilot Engaged"
"Autopilot Disabled"
"Image Enhancement Engaged"
"Shutdown Sequence initiated"
"Heat Level, Critical"
"Shutdown overridden"
"Enemy Mech Destroyed"
"All Points, attacking your target"
"Heat Level, Critical"
"Satellite link, established"
"Chain fire, engaged"
"Group Fire, engaged"
"All points, report target destroyed"
"Enemy Power up detected"
"Self Destruct sequence initiated"

If you can have the microphone about 2 inches above your head, and have the diaphram(the recieving part of the microphone) facing your mouth.  If you can provide it, a pop filter as well.  This can be bought anywhere, or you can make one out of a clothes hanger, and womens stockings.  This filter prevents plosives such as the P, sounds, and T sounds.  It is preffered that you have a large diaphram condenser microphone, but usually a small diaphram dynamic is the cheapest, they are like 20 bucks or something.  As Ladros said, 4-6 inches away from the mic or the easiest way is to take your thumb, and place it at your mouth, then open your hand away from your face, and thus creating the proper setting for the most sufficient vocal transducense through the microphone.  Be sure to look up a bit, and speak at the mic.  Also I prefer you be in a room, such as a closet.  A small walk in if possible.  I am only trying to limit any outside noise, and terrible recording as possible.  Seeing as I know not everyone has or can go to a recording studio, or has the proper acoustic treatments.  Keep all of the above in mind, and you can record your self properly.  If you want the cheapest mic with great quality(which is what I use to talk to folks on vent/TS etc.)

I use a large diaphram dynamic mic.  Which is know as a "stage" mic.  You can pic them up anywhere, best buy, frys electronics, compusa, staples, office depot, where ever.  You will need to get a special cable, if recording directly into soundcard.  XLRfemale-1/4" connecter.  These can be bought, or made.  Also be sure to get a 1/3" adapter, and make sure this adapter is for recording purposes.  Just any ol' one will not do.  The one for recording purposes will be close to 20 bucks.  Hope this does not foil your dreams of putting your womans voice in the contest.  Only trying to be a bit more specific, in order to get the best quality recordings.  Smiley

I went to school for recording engineering, so I know all this stuff, it comes to me like a twinky to a 400 pound man.

I can't get past step 1...

Hey Littledevil, I play violin, and I was wondering, what would I need to purchase to be able to record high quality samples on my PC? Just a good microphone, or a sound card as well? If I get set up, I could provide you guys with free violin melody if you need it for your music.

I know it's an unfair assessment since no other submissions are available yet, but this is a very good set of Recordings. I truly think "Target Destroyed" is her best line and I can totally picture that voice when I kill something Smiley.
