Apparently it will only affect people with non-standard drive/folder combinations.  Vista users are immune.

Some brainiac made the decision to store the game config in a file named...*drumroll*...boot.ini!  Then, when the coded the patch, someone fat fingered the path for the config file adding in an extra backslash.  Viola, instant FUBAR!

Yeah, they fixed it quick but the damage was already done.  This is a perfect example of a company obtaining a stigma with a simple mistake.

With an *avoidable* mistake. An avoidable and stupid mistake.
That's very close to Sony BMG's root kit self-ownage. I don't feel sorry for them at all.
Why name own files like core system files?

Why name own files like core system files?

I cannot think of a single reason why they would want to name it boot.ini.  It is not an operating system.  It is not booting anything.  It is a configuration file.  Use a naming convention that goes with that.

eve.cfg
config.ini
aoprocks.ini

Anything but an important system file.

Yes indeed.  I was duly impressed seeing their promotion video showing the transformation between old and new.
