It is has gone gold!

http://www.sinsofasolarempire.com/

It is a real-time galactic empire game that plays like a combination of Galactic Civilizations and Homeworld.  Up to 10 players can join in a multiplayer game with any combination of human and AI.  It would be great to see a BattleTech mod for this game to allow for a grand campaign set in the Inner Sphere.

Apparently, several of the Homeworld: Cataclysm team are on the development group for this.

My only two criticisms of the game based upon my reading of the available information is that fact that you cannot truly customize your ships and that apparently the time scale is not variable.

So how does it play out?  I don't plan on getting it if only because the next stratigy game I plan to buy is Forged Alliance (I loved the oringal Supreme Commander).

Last space strategy game I enjoyed was "Nexus: The Jupiter Incident"

Despite it being gimped during development from a galaxy-spanning tactical game, to a mission-based naval-combat adventure...

Nexus was pretty awesome.  Too bad about losing the strategic element.  I am going through the Homeworld 2 campaign while waiting for Sins to be released.

meh, master of orion 3 is so much better, more dynamic- more mooish!

And I don't have any money on me, I spent the last penny that i have on a $30 pentium 3 computer.

And windows 98 doesn't like crysis!  Angry

Joking.

After playing for a bit in a small skirmish game, I do have some reservations about the game.  Once I composed my scattered thoughts I will post more details on what I see as the shortcomings.

You'd probably have more fun with Galactic Civilizations 2 with it's Dread Lords expansion. ( I loved Master of Orion 1 and 2 [lets not mention 3])

From what my friends have said about the game is that there's a huge learning curve and games take hours to play but it's fun in multiplayer.

It does take a bit to learn the nuances of the game but the time frame for a game isn't that bad once you get accustomed.  I am really looking forward to seeing the mods that will come out for it.
