As veterans of mechwarrior 4 will know there are two perspectives you can pick from.  3rd person or 1st person.  I'm curious as to whether or not we will have the option of having a 3rd person viewpoint when piloting a mech.  I'd personally prefer that we only have 1st person because I've always felt that using 3rd person was kind of like cheating because it was the rough equivalent of having a floating video camera behind your mech.

i dislike over the shoulder 3rd person, i feel like it breaks immersion.  Not to mention gives an unfair advantage to ridge/jump snipers, as over the shoulder lets them spot targets that might otherwise be obstructed from view.

If there is a 3rd person, it shouldn't have a hud, and should be for mainly taking screenshots.

That sounds like a good compromise.  I have no qualms with it.

I too would like a 3rd person view. Not for gameplay, but just to see how great my mech looks on the map and to snap a screenshot for the family album

1st person, it's easy to pilot a helicopter in crysis with 1st person view. Only problem is that it's harder to tell if your too close to objects and you can't look around like in the crysis jeep. If possible Left, right, down, and rear view hot keys like MW4 would be nice.

We've actually had pretty much this discussion just recently.

The original concept did not include any third person view at all.
However, the current approach is that there will be a third person view and that you basically will be able to fire your weapons etc., but the view is locked on the body from certain perspectives, constantly following the core of your vehicles or Mechs, so in some perspectives, you wouldn't even see where your shots are going because that part of the screen is blocked by the vehicle/Mech. Also, there will definitely be no crosshair and no HUD at all.

In short: Third person view will not be an almost noobified view mode as in MW4, but more an opportunity to take those pictures for the family album or just look at how good Mechs etc. look in the scenery.

i dont like 3rd person view for more as an unfair adventage vs mechs.

1. JJ idiots have it easier to snipe
2. INFANTRIE lose the addventage of surprise, and get shot before they come close enought to do damage
3.for pics jes but not for something else.
4. i just own mech 3 and have played the demo of mech4
4.A mech 3 have avesome datailed cockpits,
4.B mech 4 was simply a pain to the eyes in 1person...
5. ITS UNREALISTIC
6. unfair addventage to them who dont use it-

sulution

you can switch to it BUT

you cant fire,
you have no crosshair
you cant move (maybe)
that should balance it..

I ended up using 3rd person in MW4 just because, like another poster mentioned, the cockpits were really boring... and unfortunately in order to enjoy the world more you had to go to 3rd person view.

I am all for 1st person and that was the only way I played MW2 and MW3.

From what AoP posted tho it looks like we have nothing to worry about =)

Well I'm actually quite glad to see that the community seem to essentially agree on what we on the team were thinking.

Now, by the same fact not all cockpits will be the same, some being standard windowed cockpit, and some using a simulated "camera" system. (This was my last understanding at least, and I'm taking the concept that I have of the camera view from  Steel Battalions.)

If there isn't going to be a combat usable 3rd person view then I think it'll be important to allow the player to quickly look left and right in the cockpit without having to turn the mech's torso. It might sound useless to some people, but it's not. Being able to look around in the cockpit really helps you stay aware of your surroundings, especially in slower assault mechs that can't turn quickly.

i think a quick rearview cam would be nice, considering how mechs can't check whats behind them most of the time.

I think a left, right, and back quick view would be very useful.

I don't like the 3rd person view, other than for screenshots.
3rd person view shouldn't be able to display any tactical information.

If theres going to be a 3rd person view I hope you can go into a sever and turn it off because honestly its imba as hell. The guy in first person can't see over a hill while the mech 4's kind let you see over an F'ing hill. I say if someone wants to use 3rd person they get a nice ass view of their mech with no crosshairs. Maybe an under arm view if they really want.

First person for sure is my preference although I do like switching to third occasionally, it's a nice option to have. Though as someone already mentioned removed the HUD in third person would be a good idea so that the third person view isn't used to a unfair advantage.
