I know I'm thinking far ahead here by I figured it would be better to bring this up now. I realize that during beta testing the developers will be tweaking the game fixing balancing issues, bugs, etc. There might be a better way than having to download patches every time you update something. Anyone who has played Guild Wars knows that the game updates itself every time it starts without you asking it to. Why not implement something similar to this. It would allow everyone to start the game with a latestest version without having to manually download patches.
What do you think,
Aurora Paradox
P.S. This would also allow you to implement booster packs easier.

Unless thing's have changed I assume that what they outlined in the November newsletter is still what will be happening in regard to game updates. Basically an external updater, probably ran at the either start-up (I hope not but I could live with it) or whenever you start Crysis and/or MWLL. As for GW style of update, I suspect that would be hard to code, I don't claim to be a very savvy in that respect not in game design but probably a lot of effort for minimal rewards.

EvilCow's NetMech-IV had an external updater that then launched the game for you after running. So basically, you launch the game through the updater, and therefore always update if desired. I believe it gave you an option of updating...simply let you know that it was available should you want it, and let you know of available add-ons like maps, etc. It was pretty neat. He actually added buttons to the updater/launcher executable let you choose to launch HC, MP3, or NM4 versions of the game.

A constant updater like you describe requires dedicated hosting servers with large connections to feed everyone who turns on the game, especially at peak play hours. I doubt the dev team has the money to support that. Fileplanet and the like make more sense to me.

Not necessarily. The team could host the master server that the client checks in with for version number. If a delta in the version is detected, the master server could point to a random or sequential cycle list of mirrors for the appropriate file.

That would be fine with me. I'm sure the powers that be will make whatever it takes work as well as it needs to.
With regard to "dedicated hosting servers with large connections to feed everyone who turns on the game" - this is a valid point.
I really don't know what EC's bandwidth was. I do know that NM4 didn't really catch on in a huge way - at least with those that I know. I would presume that MWLL will catch on....and thus may require more bandwidth for updating. And so it may requre dedicated hosting servers.
Either through auto-DL when joining, or auto-DL when starting...you will have to DL a patch. It just makes more sense to me to DL a patch when you first launch, rather than when you are ready to play.

Don't forget that MWLL has sponsors for a reason and I suspect that a deal might be hashed out between them to support any form of master server if it is deemed necessary.

That's a hard assumption to make. Server costs keep rising, and a company might find more money by renting a $100/mo server to a crysis clan than giving one to a mod w/o some seriously annoying restrictions.

Well, details will have to be figured out. It is indeed possible that we'll be forced to provide updates by patch files, simply because of a lack of infrastructure. That is something we can not afford to provide and can't guarantee that sponsors will be willing to provide either.

Well, like I said above, the actual distribution can be handled by sites that cater to gaming (e.g. Filefront) with a main server only handling the version check. Volunteer mirrors (like myself) could further expand it and reduce the overall load on any given resource.
