Common mech classes?
«

Hey,
I remember reading the early Battletech books. Most people were sitting in Light or Medium mechs, and the appearance of a Heavy usually meant doom for everything in it's path. I especially remember an Atlas emerging in one part of one of the books. This beast managed to completely annihilate anything and everything that dared to get into its sights.
So my question is: Will we be piloting all sorts of Mechs around the battlefield, or would it be a good idea to restrict the heavier ones a bit so their appearance is unusual and terrifying?

The restriction is enforced by the size of your wallet, plain and simple.
Every player will be able to buy what they can afford, regardless if they earned the money themselves or others pooled their money on them.

That class imbalance was mainly due to the time period. At that point in the BattleTech universe the constant warfare had degraded the Inner Sphere's capability to produce and maintain BattleMechs, especially the larger ones. The mod is set in the time at the onset of the Clan invasion. At this point in time the Houses had started to regain much of their capabilities.

Aw, that's too bad. I'd love to have some maps where lighter Mechs are more common.

If the map is build to give the lighter ones an advantage I am sure you will see them more than the heavy ones.

Which isn't unlikely. The terrain diversity established by some of the level designers isn't unlikely to promote compromise choices.

Not to mention battlefield roles and map size coming into play. The lighter, faster 'mechs will definitely be a big part of the roster of any intelligent commander. Think back to playing capture the flag in Mech 4. You had lights to serve as flag runners, assaults to act as base defense, heavys for long range support and fast mediums for mid field domination. That's the simplest example of 'mechs playing their roles, but it really made the lights the stars of the show.
In MWLL, you are going to have ground vehicle assets, aerotech, the c-bill system, and VERY LARGE MAPS.

Each of these will provide opportunities for the Ullers, Cougars, and Pumas to shine. And if that doesn't float you boat, consider well coordinated 8 'mech swarm attacks against the slow moving big boys. Boy this game is going to be fun.

Also, once some of the greener pilots start to acquire more money you'll likely see a lot of them going right after the light mechs, just for the sake of having a mech, regardless of class.
The one thing that has me worried is seeing a team of pros rolling up in nothing but assault class mechs because they all can afford it. I hope the currency system will prevent spammage of such nature.

We're actually working on something to prevent abuse of the cash system. We hope to see the practical use - or lack of it - in the beta tests.

Hopefully Light mechs will be able to make up for their lack of firepower with good support systems such as TAG Beagle Probes and ECM systems. They won' deal alot of damage, but they will still cause pain in other areas.

The mod is set in the time at the onset of the Clan invasion. At this point in time the Houses had started to regain much of their capabilities.
Most Battlemechs are infact Medium Mechs, Assault Class mechs are still relatively uncommon with Heavy and Lights in larger numbers (with light being more commen of the two).
The medium mech is the workhorse of the house forces even during the later time lines.
Though House Steiner will allways be known for it's use of large numbers of heavy and assault mechs.
Basic house mech doctrines (3050+ era)
Federated Suns (House Davion)
Prefers mobile calvery style tactics, most of their mechs are at lest 5/8 (85kph), they also favor Lasers and Autocannons. They do have a powerfull contingent of "slower" assault mechs.
House Marik (Free Worlds league)
Smiler to House Davion but favors more of a running battle and Long range weapons like LRMs and light gauss rifles, only to Finnish off weakend units with lasers and SRMs.
House Steiner (Lyran Alliance)
Walls of Steel, the lyrans preferr a slow set piece assault mounting Gauss rifles, heavy autocannons and ERPPCs. Though they favor assault mechs they do have good quality light and medium mechs (for that calvery role).
House Kurita (Draconis Combine)
The Combine have undergone a rather dramatic change over the years, they went from one on one duels and swarms of light and medium mechs, to a more balanced force both weight wise and tactically. The current DC forces favor C3 systems and PPCs, with lighter mechs acting as the spotters for there heaver brothers allowing them to hit with uncanny accuracy. They have also a very mobile force.
House Laio (Capellan Confederation)
Minefields, minefields and more minefields the capellans love a good ambush, they also prefer long range weapons. Mechs are fairly mobile so that they can close with the enemy once the ambush is sprung.

I hope the price difference in this game also justifies the effectiveness. Whereas in Mechwarrior 4 there was like 30% price difference between light and heavy mechs. Thats an easy choice if you ask me.

Pricing on 'Mechs is determined by how they're built. I've often found, through over 20 years of designing 'Mechs in CBT, MW2, MW3, and even MW4, that I can build machines that fit a better cost/benefit model than anything FASA has done since, and better than most people do depending on their preferences. What that means is... sometimes, in fact many times, the 'Mechs from the TROs are not built with bigger bang for buck in mind, so the 'Mechs you purchase may, indeed, be far more expensive and a lot less effective than 'Mechs you can design yourself.
So, if our hosts are developing this game roughly in line with CBT -not sacrificing game-play, but attempting to remain accurate otherwise- then you may purchase a Raven that's close to 6 million C-Bills, but it's effectiveness is only worth about 2 million. In fact, I don't think there's a 'Mech in the present TROs that is balanced for cost/benefit, all of the canon designs blow.
