Ok so Im going to be getting Vista soon an I have a set of generic random noob questions.

1. What version of Vista preforms best for gaming? Is there a version of Vista that boots with less background apps or has better management?

2. Can I simply turn off unneeded start up apps and programs in Vista like I can in XP?

3. If I have a 32bit version of XP can I use the cheaper upgrade pack things to get a 64bit version of Vista?

4. If I have 3gigs of ram will I see a speed increase if I go with 4 gigs in Vista?

5. Have any of you guys noticed any significant gains from working on MW:LL under DX10 over 9?

I have a legal CD of XP that I lost the CDkey for. Is there any way for me to get another key from MS? Also, I heard that a new SP doesn't require a CD to install. Is that for the new Vista SP or is the NO CD key required to install a part of the XP SP3? I cant remember Embarrassed

I have two XP disks. For a time I lost my fist one and had to buy a hole new XP. I then found my old CD but not the key. I want to dual boot Vista and XP. If I can somehow use the older CD for the upgreade version of Vista I would like to. If the NO CD key SP is for XP then it would be easy for me to do that be creating a custom XP install disk with the SP3 already on it.

1. They all run the same kernel. The best performing would be the one with the lowest overhead, so basic. I've been running a trail version of Server 2k8 which is built on the same kernel and it's significantly faster then Vista Ultimate. Both were 64 bit versions with 4GB of RAM.

2. Yes. But interprocess depenancy seems to be worse so you can't go down to as few running processes.

3. don't know. Call Microsoft and ask.

4. If you don't have 4GB of RAM save yourself the headache of software compatibility issues and use the 32 bit OS.

5. No, MWLL runs equally well under either DirectX environment. There's more to this but I'm not even gonna drop any hints.

There is a way to find out your CD key. There is a freeware program that will do the job but I can't remember where to find it.  Its legal though.  I'll post the link when I find it.

To be honest... I tried Vista for 6 months, sold the laptop it was on, bought a mac, and haven't looked back since. I'll keep XP Pro 64-bit on my gaming desktop just for games but for everything else my MacBook Pro does the trick. In my mind DX10 just isn't worth dealing with the piece of crap that is Vista. Other may feel differently but that is just my opinion.

Photoshop CS3 Load Time on Vista = 1 minute 32 seconds
Photoshop CS3 Load Time on OSX 10.5 = 7 seconds

Same CPU clock speed & same amount of RAM... You do the math...

Just built a new machine and I have Vista Home Premium 64 bit.  It has given me a lot of trouble.  Vista is a bit different than the XP Pro on my last machine so it is a bit unfamiliar and that may be some of the problem.

Vista has a full service pack out already so you know it had real trouble when it first came out.  If they don't get it fixed soon, MAC is going to eat them alive, unless of course good old Bill buys Apple.

I have been using Vista Ultimate 64-bit for a while now.  After gutting all the bullshit processes that are on by default I find it much more responsive now.  Having 8GB of RAM is nice and there is noticeable performance improvements when using multiple applications.  Much of what makes Vista so damned clunky are the "features" that Microsoft touts as improvements.  The two biggest killers in my experience were the prefetch (Superfetch) and Indexing services.  Once those bastards were killed my systems have improved dramatically.

On a side note, having 8GB does allow for some interesting possibilities.  I have used a small application to take a 2GB slice of RAM and turn it into a virtual disk.  Pointing Photoshop to that space for its scratch disk does wonders.

Im in the exact same boat as Panzer. After clearing all the nonsense out it actually runs pretty well. I find that multiple processes run con-currently sp? much faster than on my xp pro 64.

Crysis runs 1,000 times better on XP than Vista, 8 fps on high for vista vs 20 fps on high for XP.

The key to vista is taming it.  You need to clean all the crap out of your PC.  All those unneeded processes and applications that do nothing but eat your RAM.  In addition your PC needs to be built to handle the OS.  I'd recommend a mutl-core process(highest speed you can afford), 2GB of RAM, and a mid range video card at the very least.  I've have no problems with vista whatsoever once I cleaned it out.  The machine purrs like a kitten.

The problem with "cleaning vista out" is that you lose security features. For example, to get all those annoying pop ups from coming up every time you click on something, you have to disable the user account security. Thus, making your PC much less secure. Vista is just a bad OS.

I am not saying this because I like OSX or think it is cool to hate Microsoft. It is simply the truth. I loved Vista for about a week. It looked cool and was new and different. But then after installing some programs and watching my performance go to the gutter, I couldn't stand it. Now I use a Mac with OSX 10.5 on it. I have a cool, new looking, shiny OS that is a hell of a lot more secure and runs a hell of a lot better. I hesitated to make the change thinking that as a software engineer I wouldn't be able to use the Mac to do all the things I needed to do for my job. Now that I have had it for 4 months I realize that it was a completely unsubstantiated thought. I can do everything I need to do and more.

The tables have turned and times have changed. I will bet that we will continue to see Apple take more and more market share from Windows over the next decade. I will bet that we will see more and more games ported to and written for Mac and OpenGL.

My advice to you? Buy a mac... use OSX for all your daily activities like surfing the net, downloading porn, office work, school work, etc. Run Windows XP Pro SP3 in Bootcamp (basically making your mac a dual boot machine) to play games on. Thus, you get the security, features, and performance of OSX but also keep the ability to play games on WinXP. Or run Vista in bootcamp so you get DX10 for your games... just don't use the vista partition for anything else.

Just my .02.

Well, I've been using vista for a long time now...I have Vista Ultimate 64 and I believe I installed it....*thinks*....7 or 8 months ago?

Anyway, I've had absolutely ZERO problems with.  Everything installs fine, I haven't run into a single compatibility issue, and the load times are GREAT.  I play Crysis with most of the settings on high and it looks sweet, and I've had no trouble installing old games like the original Diablo and its expansion.  The system hasn't crashed at all (except for one time when it was my fault for installing 2 drivers, an update, and a game all at the same time), and is rock solid.

I haven't even "cleaned it out."  I left most of the default stuff alone because, performance wise, things are pretty ridiculously fast.  The thing boots up a heck of a lot faster than it ever did with XP on it too, though, admittedly, I was do for an XP reinstall anyway.

Here's my system specs in case you're wondering what I'm running Vista so well on:
Core2Duo Conroe Oc'ed from 2.4 ghz to 3.03
EVGA 680i T1 MOBO
2 7200 RPM SATA 3.0 gb/s HDD's (one's a Seagate, and one was an emergency purchase Maxtor)
Mushkin 4 GB of DDR2 800 RAM (though I think I'm going to swap that out for some DDR2 1200 some day)
BFG 8800 GTX OC edition

So yeah, it's not the highest of the high end, but it's no slouch either.  Again, 0 problems with Vista.  I think they've come a long way since the initial launch.  And the annoying pop-ups that ask you if you're sure you're sure you want to do this can be turned off pretty easily. Grin
