I've been browsing your forums for a bit, and I'm unsure as to whether or not you will be making a game with a solid story-line or a very complex multi-player mod.  Personally, I prefer my games to have both--but hey, you can't always have your cake and eat it too.  Smiley

That being said, if you want a solid story line, you need yourself a writer.  The reason I say this is simple: the other Battletech PC games had a plot and a story, but it wasn't all that strong.  Let's be honest, the thing most players remember from playing those games is hopping in a giant 2 legged beast of a machine and turning their computer-generated enemies to tiny motes of dust.  There's nothing wrong with that, but there's a reason RPG's have become so popular--I mean just look at their modern iterations like Mass Effect.  Personally, I feel that each game that wants a story should have at least a single dedicated writer that does nothing but write for the game.  I'm talking dialogue, narration, extras like in-game newspaper articles; the whole 9 yards.

So, without further ado:

Name: Quinton Lawman

Age: 25

Position: Writer/Story Development

Past Projects: I was an English major in college and graduated with a BA.  I have several graded works I could provide as well as short stories I've written recently.  I'm also working on a total of 3 novels (one is a collaboration) and can supply samples from those as well.  I didn't want to post them up in the forums, however, because they're a little on the long-ish side and I don't want everyone and their brother reading my work before it's done for a plethora of reasons. Smiley

Ties to Mechwarrior: I started off playing Battletech as a kid--I think was around 11 years old..maybe a little older, I don't remember.  In any case, I quickly became obsessed and memorized the rules.  This is for the miniatures game with the fold-out maps consisting of terrain markers and hexagons for movement.  You rolled 6-sided dice to see if you hit your oponent, screwed up your piloting, etc.  Then Earthseige came out for the computer, which wasn't a part of the Battletech universe, but was a game with big mechs in it that you got to stomp on things with.  It was great fun.  From there it went to Earthseige II, then to MechWarrior, then MechWarrior II, then Mercenaries, etc. (Mercenaries is still my favorite)  In other words, I've loved the Battletech universe ever since my older brother showed it to me as a kid.  I've even seen the cartoon series.

Other commitments: Well, I'm a technical writer for a company called TMSI (www.tmsi-usa.com), and obviously have to keep working there to earn my pay. Smiley  Other than that, there are the novels I work on in my free time, and I just bought a house and it needs a little love.  Other than that, I'm free and clear.

SAMPLES: Like I said up there, I'd be happy to supply them for you, but I didn't want to post them up in the forums.  In addition, I'm unsure as to whether you even need a writer (i.e. you don't need one if all you're going for is multi-player mayhem), so I figured I wouldn't hand in any samples unless you decide you want to explore the possibility of a writer further.  So, what I'm saying is, shoot me an E-mail or a PM and let me know if you want to read something, and I'll make sure you have a sample the same day. Smiley

Well, thanks for at least reading my app!  Please let me know if you've any interest.  That being said, I really hope this mod takes off because I've been dying for a good next-gen MechWarrior game.

At the moment the mod is multiplayer only although we're thinking about a possible single player campaign as well later on, after release of the mod so stick around if you can. Hey, that way you can get your house in shape and be ready to come up with a killer story.

Sounds good to me Smiley

Oh, I'll definitely stick around...I've always wanted a solid mutli-player MechWarrior game and, in my opinion, there never has been one.  Just keep me in mind for that single-player game you're kickin' around in the back of your head!

I can't speak for the Dev team, but I don't see any reason why a mature, creative person can't find a place to be useful in MW:LL.

Stories are based on plots, usually protagonist vs antagonist. Maps are based on objectives, and with a little brain-twisting those objectives could be compared to plots. Sometimes people on the creative technical side, like level designers, need just a spark to get them going, like a cool set of objectives for a map. Most of us have been inspired by the Battletech game itself, but level designers have a hard job trying to both create the physical plane for us to play on, as well as a new, exciting objective to work for. One of the most annoying things in current MMORGs is the endless "fetch this" quest, or "kill X of these" quests.

As a story writer, I'm sure you can see the importance of exciting and challenging plots (objectives). Perhaps you could dream up a few to inspire our level designers.

I DREAM of MWLL to someday get single player  Grin

But currently I hear there are major issues with getting the AI to work in mechs, and a lack of AI-savvy coders.

http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/forum/index.php/topic,1918.0.html basically applies for all applicants with skills that are not required in the process of production. A writer, at this point at least, isn't required for that process.

In addition...

We wouldn't even have enough level designers to take care of that.

I thought that was part of the issue with getting the AI to work well in mechs was a lack of AI-experienced coders on the team?

That was the major problem. But now we have Seiko. We may actually work on a single player campaign after we release the original. Who knows.

Shocked That would be the greatest thing since...  Well since MWLL of course!  I'd be all over that like a fat man on a pancake.
(incidentally I AM a fat man, and I looooove pancakes.  so no offense intended to anyone.)

Hehehe...I know what you mean about the "fetch this" missions every MMO seems to be stuck with, and sure, I'd be happy to toss around ideas with whoever will listen! :-)

Thanks to everyone who took the time to read over my app though, I appreciate it!

And thanks, I kinda like my name too! :-)
