Teamplay and You: How to Have A Better Experience
« on: January 17, 2010, 05:39:33 PM »
Well lately it seems that all of the players of MW:LL have finally gotten their feet wet in the mod and are past learning the controls and dealing with the basics of the game. The new reduction in lag also seems to help with allowing people to focus on the game. That said, while we're focusing on the game it becomes a great deal more difficult and complex. The best way to deal with issues that could potentially ruin a match for yourself and your teammates is to foster teamwork to deal with the problem.

Here's a few things that I have noticed about team play that could greatly improve the quality of your match.

1.) Don't be afraid to try to initiate teamwork. Be polite and ask for help - don't try to boss people around. If you're having trouble running into a group of 'mechs that you know you can't confront on your own, see if you can't get some help. I have had several instances where I've asked players to wait up for me out of the spawn and had others join into the group so as to form a lance or star of 'mechs. This is a great way to start cooperation and it helps make the game less suicidal and more competitive on both sides. Nothing is better than marching onto the airfield at marshes with a full lance of heavies and assaults only to find yourself met by another lance of roughly equal strength. That's how MW:LL should be.

2.) Look to work with your team first, do less solo fighting - Find where your team is on the battlefield and make yourself present there. See what you can do to help out on the front lines of the fight and try to stick with the majority of folks, rather than doing a solo flanking run or just trying to take on the enemy yourself. Sometimes all your team may need is for more people to be present at a firefight for it to turn from complete and total rout to overwhelming victory.

3.) Donate cash you aren't using - Before you get in your 'mech, throw your extra cbills to a random player, especially those who are on the lower end of your team's board. It will help them acquire a more powerful 'mech or vehicle and make your team more potent in the field. This also increases the probability that they will rank up more quickly and be less of a disadvantage late in the game.

4.) Know what roles your team needs and don't be afraid to switch to them - Sometimes your team will be plain out-manned by a particular threat (BA, Aerospace etc.) and not enough of your teammates are filling support roles to deal with that threat. If you notice this, don't be afraid to try a new support role or switch to that role to attempt to deal with the threat yourself. Even if you distract those enemies, you greatly hinder their effectiveness against the rest of your team for the time being. Never be afraid to try something new, I guarantee you al of the game is fun.

5.)TALK. - Hit the U key and type, or use the microphone if you like with left alt. It's never a bad idea to start communicating. The more you talk, the more you'll find that others will talk back. Communication is the first step to having team work.

If you do simple things like these and create some team cohesion, you'll find that the game becomes altogether more enjoyable. It's hard to beat having two lances of 'mechs going at it instead of scattered firefights, it's more fun to have people to work with on the front rather than just try to go lone wolf. The best times I have had playing MW:LL so far are the times where I have found myself on a team that was working together. I guarantee you'll find the same thing.

Great post Skunker.  I couldn't agree more.  I'd love to see this kind of teamwork going on on our gold server.

I was gonna post on something like this too, but from the point of view of feature requests. Although its fairly easy to do team work now by manually talking/typing, if there was a system in place to assist it it could make the mod even better. I was thinking like some way to share targetting data so you can conduct coordinated attacks, and maybe a "help me" beacon that visually/sonically alerts team mates to a certain location. I think some kind of teamwork system could really enhance peoples playing experience.

The first option may be similar to the C3 system from what I've read, in that you can take in radar info from other team mates. I wonder if you can actually share/designate targets though - I've just seen that its been added to some mechs in the patch, so will go check it out now.

I agree with you on that one, nordwars. At least the C3 makes scouting 'mechs useful for the team - especially for fire support 'mechs.

Overall I think the best way for teamplay to develop would be for a good strong community of public players to start utilizing VOIP servers while playing with one another. I typically hop on the official TS server listed here, but it's usually empty.

I would not be opposed to trying to privately organize a small group for VOIP coordinated play just to get the ball rolling. It's really a lot better when you can talk about what's going on.

I would use the talk key mate. But it seems to be broken. All i get is incoherent and crappy speech. I have never heard anyone talk so i can understand it on this game.(and yes i have voice coms active in my options)

Eh, I don't use the voice key much myself. I usually try to communicate via teamchat.

Other thing, if you're scouting for flying around, call out grid coordinates on enemy sightings.  These really help people navigate to the battle if they're running in passive mode.

Is there a ventrillo or teamspeak server where everyone is at? I'm sure someone could host a 50-75 slot server and it would be enough for the community for now

I've never seen/heard anyone using the in-game VOIP, does it even work? I have a sexy PC-350 that I'd be willing to use, but never gave it much thought.

6) Don't sit around and do nothing!

This one confuses me.

Not that I don't see it happen - the bit that confuses me is that its an actual problem.

I mean, when I join a server I grab a mech and get stuck right in - but there's almost always 2-3 people standing around, either in the 'mech hangar or just outside it o.o

I also want to throw in that you can still use the Crysis voice-commands (Press F7 for example). This way it calls out your grid location and whether you spotted Aircraft, Vehicle, Infantry.

I'd like to hear some ideas about why none of that teamwork stuff occured in MechWarrior4 and yet it is expected that it will occur here.
The key is to obscure your intentions and make them unpredictable to your opponent while you simultaneously clarify his intentions. That is, operate at a faster tempo to generate rapidly changing conditions that inhibit your opponent from adapting or reacting to those changes and that suppress or destroy his awareness. Thus, a hodgepodge of confusion and disorder occur to cause him to over- or under-react to conditions or activities that appear to be uncertain, ambiguous, or incomprehensible.
