Fully Automatic Pulse Lasers
« on: March 10, 2010, 06:47:06 PM »
In translating CBT rules to real time, I find there are occasional logical gaffs like the two-shot ultra autocannons and, pursuant to my subject, pulse lasers.

The current burst, though very cool, does not seem to properly simulate the accuracy advantage of pulse lasers.  The problem stems from the fact that a lot happens while that burst occurs, and you can guarantee hitting a target with all or most of that burst unless you're very close.

So, I suggest making pulse lasers fully automatic, with an individual heat meter like RACs.  Give them a short, fully automatic burst that they can stagger over time to create more consistent fire.

It occurs to me that this would make pulse lasers a lot like those in Mechwarrior 2, only without the lame machine-gun tracer animation.

I actually like the Idea of turning Pulse Lasers into some sort of laser machine gun, as it would give them some real difference to the normal Beam Lasers. Right now their only differences are the stats, or am I wrong on this?

Maybe I would not give them a heat bar like smaller ACs or RACs, but try to balance it over the normal heat gauge (or maybe a mix of both)

The Donegal Guards will hold their post and Steiner's fist will be the last thing our enemies feel as it crushes their will and drives them into oblivion.

What are you trying to suggest here? In one sentence, you say you want MW3 style lasers where there's a gauge measuring how long you can fire, and you must mash down Mouse1. In the next, you say you want MW2 style lasers, which we already have.

Or do you want MW3 pulse lasers, with MW2 style graphics?

I think he wants the lasers as they currently are, but firing full auto for awhile instead of a few pulses every now and then.
A laser RAC, along with the overheat gauge.

I wouldn't mind it, cause honestly I don't feel like there's a significant difference between the normal lasers and the pulse lasers.

It should probably pump out a lot more heat though just so people don't spam it to fry limbs off.  The nova cat config with the er larges are basically like that right now when in chain fire.

This.

I also rather like the current pattern of pulse lasers.  That's one reason I want to give them their own individual heat, so we can decrease the rate of fire as the heat increases and get a pattern like we have now if you hold down the fire button.

This would also create a bit of discipline, forcing users to stagger their fire to a degree.  If we were to simply make them fully automatic like RACs but with less total fire time, they would indeed be too powerful.

The idea is largely to make pulse lasers more accurate by giving more control over their firing pattern, not making them the newest best weapon.

I somewhat support this idea, but only because I feel pulse lasers are one of the weakest weapons you can field. Any suggestion at this point would probably make them more useful.

I acutaly realy love this idea it would allow pusle lasers to realy stand out. Also this would be more cannonical and ineed allow for allow for more fine control.

I think what we need is the MW3 style with more heat/cool down. This way ya get the bursts effect with full control over the timeing of it allowing for better acuracy.

Love the idea as well as its logic (in my world).

Only the overheating of these flashlights should happen really quick if you fire on 'fullauto' all the time.

I think this is a nice idea.  I've been asked before what the difference between a regular beam laser and a pulse laser is.  All the differences that can be seen are rather minor and doesn't make it distinct.  Making it more like a laser gatling gun would increase the amount of thought put into choosing pulse or beam.  Using them would require you to watch both your mech heat gauge and the weapons heat gauge so with some balance it could work out very nicely.
