1. Anhur Showcase

In this month’s edition we here at MechWarrior: Living Legends are proud to showcase one of our latest in game vehicles – the Clan Anhur Transport.

http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/images/newsl_img/June/anhur45.jpg

Overview:

The Clans engage in short, goal-oriented military engagements whenever possible, but the need to maintain a flow of material and equipment to the battlefield has long been a concern, exacerbated during the Inner Sphere invasion. While DropShips serve to carry necessary equipment and supplies between worlds, their use is too expensive for on-world transport. As a practical alternative, the Clans use transport vehicles like the Anhur. One of the few designs to pre-date ilKhan Winson's vehicle design review, the Anhur is based on the classic Star League Cobra chassis.

Capabilities:

Like the NETC/ComStar Karnov UR design, also based on the Cobra, the Anhur uses a tilt-rotor design, giving it V/STOL capabilities. Capable of taking off or landing without the benefit of a prepared runway, the vehicle is suitable for delivering supplies directly to units in the field.

This role all but guarantees encounters with enemy troops, and so the Anhur carries a formidable array of weapons. A pair of nose-mounted extended-pulse lasers provide both range and volume of fire, allowing the Anhur to discourage threats on the ground and in the air. Recently the Anhur has also been equipment with SRM launchers on the sides of the nose that have been custom made to handle the specific M83-Smoke SRMs. Designed to cover the landing and take off of the Anhur, the M83-Smoke SRM can be fired directly at the location the pilot wishes to provide smoke cover from direct line of sight weaponry.

The cavernous cargo bay is rated for loads of up to several tons and can carry anything from light vehicles or cargo to conventional infantry platoons.

Three tons of advanced armor composites provide the crew and cargo with considerable protection against enemy fire, but the Anhur relies primarily on speed and terrain masking to avoid being seen or engaged. The vehicle's crew, consisting of a pilot and gunner specialize in ground-hugging flights. Accustomed to the violent pitching and rolling that accompanies such flights, they often appear to take a perverse pleasure in the discomfort this causes passengers.

Deployment

All Clans use the Anhur for logistical operations, but relatively few use them for combat operations. The Anhur is mostly seen in Alpine regions of the Inner Sphere worlds, but now has recently taken on more of a direct troop and vehicle transport across open battlefields to quickly transport reinforcements to the front lines. With this in mind, the Anhur can easily be modified to be operationally ready for any combat environment.

3. Concept Art

Last Month we presented the Clan Player Model Concepts created by our Artist – Sherrell, and this month we are proud to bring you the Inner Sphere Player model counter parts. He has composited all the ideas discussed among the team regarding the over all look of our infantry models. It is important to note that there is very little reference as far as infantry goes in the BattleTech universe, as such, we had free reign when it came to creating our character models. Sherrell put these ideas to paper for our modeling team to work off of and below is the collection of our completely original Inner Sphere Player Model concepts.

4. Meet the Devs

In an attempt to shed some light on the people behind MechWarrior: Living Legends, every future edition of the newsletter will be featuring another member of the dev team.

In this month’s issue, we’re proud to introduce to you Jeff  “Death Grin” Richey.

http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/images/newsl_img/June/face.jpgGreeting!  My name is Jeff Richey, and I am the lead level designer and a lead dev of the Mechwarrior:Living Legends mod.  To get formalities out of the way I am 23 years old and currently living in southern California, but originally I am from Montana. Aside from level design and the general game design I also help out doing odds and ends with some various modeling and photoshop work, which tends to keep me very busy.  I have been in the hobby of game modding since 1998, first starting out with Blizzards Starcraft and moving to many other RTSs.  The first FPS I ever modded was Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls 3:  Morrowind. From there I have also used a number of various engines anywhere from the version of Hammer that came with Red Faction to Valves current Source engine  The bulk of my FPS modding, however, has been in Battlefield 2 and 2142 where I am currently also the lead mapper for the Warhammer40k mod.  I also have a passion for game design in general and have been designing games in some way or another for around 10 years, first doing tabletop war games then creating new tabletop role-playing games. So my passion for gaming spawns across a very wide spectrum of genres and mediums.  My ultimate goal is to work in the game development business and I hope this real world experience will contribute to that goal.

Ultimately my job within the mod is to design and create levels while coordinating the efforts of our level design team with that of the other lead developers.  While doing this I am responsible for maintaining believability and a general artistic style.  The main difficulty I have had in this project is having to build levels without the benefit of a actual game editor. The team has been trying to patch missing holes while putting into practice what information we have had and what tools we know will work.  But that’s not to say that we haven't had A TON of support from Splash Damage and ID Software.  Their support so far for a game that hasn't even been released has been awesome and is definitely a factor in our choice to mod ETQW.  My goal for our mod is to create a very enjoyable and unique experience based on the Battletech universe through our levels. It’s great to have all these cool weapons and vehicles, but if the levels are bland and boring then it still won't be any fun to play.

Only the future will tell if we have succeeded.

6.  Website

As the game assets are created, the information of the mod is continually being updated on the MW:LL website. We currently have completed a devoted section of the site specifically to the FAQs of both MW:LL and the Modding of ET:QW. Links can be found below.

MechWarrior: Living Legends – F.A.Q.

Modding Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

Recently, we have also completed lists of both, the Inner Sphere and Clan vehicles, mechs and equipment that will be seen in the initial release of the Mod. You can find the links to these pages by clicking on the pictures below.

We have always stressed that we’re very much focused on feedback from the community, which is why we’re establishing several offspring projects. The MW:LL site at the famous ModDB is probably more conventional than our appearance on the social networking platform MySpace.com. To appropriately honor the work of our various artists, we’re even working on a site at deviantart.com.

Should this be the first issue of the newsletter you receive, you might be interested in the newsletter archive, that can also be accessed here.
